The word monk conjures up different meanings to different people. For some it means a narrow-minded fanatic out of the Middle Ages, burning people at the stake. for others it evokes the image of a Francis of Assisi preaching to the birds, the gentle rustle of ancient pages in the library and the serenity of chant. We see ourselves in this latter light, most certainly not as narrow-minded fanatics (and harbor no plans to burn anyone at the stake).
We believe that genuine holiness returns us to a state of harmony with all creation "where love abides". With joy we treasure and practice the Orthodox Christian Faith where this holiness is to be found and we honestly believe it has a tremendous amount to offer modern society. Our life style does have many things that are ancient in origin: We sing our chapel services in Byzantine Chant (using both Greek and English), and a day's work may include the making of illuminated manuscripts and icons as well as using the internet in correspondence and marketing.
Monks are not afraid of modern technologies, just very careful in their use of them. Our work includes various pastoral activities: outreach, lectures and retreats; the practice of a variety of traditional art and craft work such as icon painting, weaving, calligraphy; and the cultivation of gardens for both the monastic chapel and table.
